How do mastectomy bras work? Mastectomy bras are often fuller cup bras to enclose all of the breast and ensure any forms are fully secure and will not been seen. The bras often have pockets in built into the cups to house softies or a prosthesis.
How do I measure for a mastectomy bra? For a single mastectomy it is important to fit to your natural breast, as this will help to balance out the bra. The underband should sit horizontal around the ribcage with the cups fully encasing the breast or prosthesis with no bugling or excess fabric.

What to look for in a mastectomy bra

Mastectomy bras are often made of cotton or soft microfibre for ultimate comfort. The bras often have deep sides, higher centre fronts and stretchy cups with pockets to allow for a prosthesis. Depending on the surgery, a single or double prosthesis can be worn with these bras.

Main features to look for when choosing a mastectomy bra:

• Pocketed inner cups for prosthesis security.
• Higher cut neckline and deeper at the side seams to avoid any scar tissue and help keep the risk of lymphedema down.
• Stretch neckline to allow for the prosthesis to sit fully into the cups.
• Wider, comfortable straps.
• Soft fabrics and trims.
• Seamfree is not necessary as the cups do not touch the skin or the scars due to the breast form.

Usually wearing a non-wired bra is recommended for at least 12 months following surgery, however the best advice is to listen to your body and consult a medical professional or breast care unit if unsure.

Some women may choose to look to wear a traditional underwired bra, depending on scar tissue and sensitivity around the area. It is best to speak to your breast care nurse before trying any new bras.
